A domain transfer moves a domain name from one registrar to another. To be eligible, a domain must have been with its current registrar for at least 60 days. For most top-level domains (TLDs), preparation involves unlocking the domain and requesting an EPP transfer key. This article walks you through preparing your domain, ensuring transfers add a year of registration, preventing downtime, and resolving a common locking error.
Note: .UK domain transfers are the exception and follow a different process. Moving domains internally between Enom accounts is called a push and does not require a transfer.
Before you begin
- The domain must have been registered with Enom for at least 60 days.
- The registrant email on file must be valid, as the transfer key is sent there.
- If your domain was registered through an Enom reseller, they must prepare it for transfer on your behalf.
Warning: To cancel an outgoing transfer, you must do so through the gaining provider.
Preparing your domain for transfer
To prepare a domain for transfer, unlock the domain and then request the EPP key. Transfers take five to seven days to complete from the date you initiate the transfer with your new provider.
Step 1: Unlock your domain
For customers registered through the Google reseller program, refer to the alternate steps within the domain management portal.
- Sign in to your account.
- Choose Domains followed by My domains.
- Locate the domain.
- Choose General settings from the domain management dropdown.
- Select Disable on the Registrar-Lock and Auto-Renew, then Save.
Step 2: Request the transfer code
A transfer code, EPP key, and authorization code are all terms for the unique code needed to transfer your domain. While this code is valid for several days, we recommend initiating the transfer immediately. The EPP key can still be requested for expired domains; however, the registrant's email cannot be changed after expiration. Once you initiate your transfer, it is automatic and takes five to seven days. If your new provider advises that the code is not working, we can generate a new one for you.
Note: There is no way to request EPP keys in bulk.
- Sign in to your account.
- Choose Domains followed by My domains.
- Search for your domain or select it from the list.
- Choose General settings from the domain management dropdown.
- Select Email auth info to Registrant.
Note: The transfer key is sent to the domain registrant email, so ensure it is valid. Changing the registrant email will prompt a 60-day transfer lock that can be opted out of.
Ensuring transfers add a year of registration
The gaining registrar will typically add an extra year to the domain name registration once the transfer completes.
Warning: If a domain expires, is renewed during the grace period, and is then transferred between registrars within 45 days of being renewed, the gaining registrar will charge for the transfer, but no additional year will be added. This is a registry restriction and applies to all registrars. Enom does not provide a refund for a domain that is renewed with us and then transferred away within the first 45 days after the expiration date.
Preventing domain downtime
To prevent your domain from going down during a transfer, use third-party nameservers or arrange for the receiving registrar's nameservers to be ready. When you transfer your domain out of Enom, our DNS service terminates as soon as we receive a transfer-out request.
Resolving the "access control violation, name locking not allowed" error
A common reason for this error is that the domain is under a 60-day transfer lock. This lock applies when you update any of the following registrant contact details on any gTLD domain (non-country-code) in your Enom account:
- Registrant First Name
- Registrant Last Name
- Registrant Organization Name
- Registrant Email
In some cases, this lock can be removed by our support team within five days of it being applied by submitting a verified support request.
Expediting an outgoing domain transfer
Once the transfer process starts, the registrant's email address receives an approval email. You can expedite the outgoing transfer by confirming the link.
- Select the link to approve or deny the domain transfer.
- Review the transfer details, select Approve, and press Submit.
- Confirmation of your response is recorded, and the transfer is expedited.
Cancelling an outgoing domain transfer
To cancel an outgoing domain transfer from Enom, follow the cancellation link provided in the original confirmation email sent during the transfer process. If you have lost or cannot locate the email, you must contact Enom Support directly to request cancellation.
