.UK domain policies

.UK, .CO.UK, .ME.UK as well as .ORG.UK are the country code TLDs (ccTLD) for the United Kingdom and is administered by Nominet.

Registration

.UK domain names can be registered for 1-10 years. There are no specific requirements for registering a .UK domain name. Businesses cannot use the whois opt-out, while an individual can opt out at the time of registration during pre-configuration.

Anyone can register a .UK domain name; however, registrants will still be required to pre-configure the Legal type of registrant contact section. Note: .UK WHOIS information must perfectly match the associated .CO.UK, .ORG.UK, or .ME.UK information. Perform a WHOIS check on the .UK domain to determine which TLD must be matched.

Renewal

If a .UK domain reaches its expiry date without being renewed, Nominet sends a reminder to the Owner recommending that they contact their registrar to renew the domain. The registrant has 30 days from the expiry date to renew the domain. If the domain is not renewed by 23 days after the expiry date, Nominet sends another message to the registrant warning them that their domain will be suspended in seven days.

If the domain is not renewed, Nominet notifies the registrant that their domain has been suspended and will remain suspended for 60 days. During these 60 days, the suspended domain can be recovered by renewing it.

Nominet sends a final message 53 days after the beginning of the suspension period notifying the registrant that the domain name will be cancelled in seven days. If the 60-day suspension period passes and the domain is not renewed, the domain is deleted and becomes available for registration.

Contact Updates

Registrants can update everything here except for the "REGISTERED FOR" value and, as long as it matches what Nominet has, will sync with Nominet. Alternatively, customers can update at Nominet, but it won't sync up with Enom's system.

  1. Login to your account.

Transferring

Transferring out a .UK domain name is slightly different than a gTLD transfer, .UK domains use Tags to transfer.

Once the domain is re-tagged, the registrant must initiate a transfer with the new provider.

After the tag is updated for transferring in a .UK domain, the customer then initiates the incoming transfer and can put NA or N/A for the transfer code.

  1. Sign in to the account.

  2. Select Domains followed by Transfer a domain.

  3. Enter the domain followed by NA for the transfer code.

No auto-verification email is sent if the domain comes from a different registrar. If eNom to eNom transfer, an email is sent to the registrant's email address listed in the holder's account.

VAT

VAT refers to Value Added Tax, a tax levied by the UK government. Different implications depend on the location from which you operate your business.

Resellers who are not UK corporations must pay VAT on .*.UK registrations, but may be able to reclaim the paid VAT.

Resellers who are residents of the UK or elsewhere in Europe must pay VAT on .UK registrations and then reclaim the VAT paid as they normally would because the services we provide are considered to be supplied from outside the UK.

Domain deletion

We do not delete .UK domains unless they are within the five-day grace period.
