.FR domain policies

.FR is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for France. It is administered by AFNIC.

Registration

General requirements

IDNs are not supported for this ccTLD. The minimum length possible is three characters, and the maximum is 63. In addition to the length requirements, there is a set of domains that have been reserved by the registry and cannot be registered. The list is available in the "subject to prior review" document at AFNIC.

.FR domains can be registered for one year at a time.

The domain's nameservers must pass a registry check for the domain to become active. The nameservers can be validated at this site.

WHOIS requirements

The registrant can be either a company or an individual. Individuals must be a resident of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, and companies must be located in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein. This ccTLD requires additional WHOIS information at registration:

Renewals and Redemption

.FR domains are auto-renew only and must be automatically renewed at least ten days prior to their expiration date. If the domain is not renewed by this date it will go into redemption and there will be an additional fee to recover it, as well as the renewal fee. Restorations will add one year to the existing expiration date.

Renewals are asynchronous. It is expected behavior for the registry expiration date not to be updated immediately after an automatic renewal order has been placed successfully at Enom. When an automatic renewal order is placed, the order is created at Enom, but the registry renews the domain at the end of its renewal month.

Note: Due to a policy update by AFNIC in 2022, domain redemptions are now complete with an expiry date of one year after the domain’s prior expiry date.

Transfers

Enom does not support incoming transfers of .FR domains. Outgoing transfers require an authorization code.

Change of ownership

Trades are required to change the registrant's first name, last name, or organization name. They require approval by both the new and old registrants and have no cost. Please contact support through a verified request with the new registrant details to initiate the trade.
