Domain and URL forwarding sends visitors who type one domain (or subdomain) to a different web address. Enom supports forwarding through host records on domains that use Enom's nameservers. This article explains the two forwarding methods and how to set them up.
How forwarding works at Enom
A URL redirect and URL forward is a set of host records that sends your domain's visitors to another URL. You can forward your domain to most sites that are active and online. Enom offers two forwarding record types:
| Record type | What it does | Address bar |
| URL redirect | Forwards the hostname directly to the website you specify (an HTTP redirect). | Shows the destination site's URL. |
| URL frame | Forwards the hostname to the website you specify but keeps your domain visible. | Keeps your domain in the address bar. |
Enom does not support SSL for URL-redirected domains; each destination site is responsible for its own SSL. Also, some sites (such as Facebook) do not allow URL framing regardless of DNS setup.
Before you begin
- The domain must use Enom's nameservers. If the domain is not using Enom's default nameservers, host record changes will not affect it.
- Have the full destination URL ready (the address you want visitors sent to).
Step 1: Open the domain's host records
- Sign in to your Enom control panel.
- Click Domains, then My Domains.
- Search for the domain or choose it from the list.
- Choose Host records from the manage domain dropdown.
Step 2: Add a forward (redirect or frame)
- To forward visitors and show the destination URL, set the record type to URL redirect. To keep your domain visible in the address bar, choose URL frame instead.
- Create the forwarding records — typically for the www and @ (naked domain) hostnames — entering your destination address in the address field.
- Press Save.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the change to propagate; the redirect may not work immediately.
To forward a subdomain (such as shop.example.com), add the subdomain as the hostname and point it to the appropriate destination or IP. See Managing DNS Host Records for subdomain setup.
