Forward Opt-In Feature for Hosted Email

A new Forward Opt-In feature has been introduced to Hosted Email to improve security and reduce abuse. It requires recipients to approve email forwards before receiving any forwarded content. This feature is effective September 18th, 2025.

Why this feature was introduced

The feature combats malicious forwarding abuse, where attackers use forwarding to send spam or scams without consent. It ensures recipients must opt in before any forwarded emails reach them.

How the opt-in works

ActionBehavior
Adding a forwardSends an opt-in email to the recipient.
Recipient clicks approval linkForwarding begins.
No approval in 24 hoursRequest expires.
Forward removedApproval revoked.
Re-adding a forwardRequires new approval.
Max pending requests20 per mailbox.
API endpointShows pending and approved forwards.

Note: The opt-in email cannot be customized for security reasons.

Workflow example

In this scenario, me@mydomain.com forwards to john@example.com:

  1. Add john@example.com via MAC or API.
  2. John receives an opt-in email.
  3. John clicks Approve.
  4. Forwarding starts.
  5. If John takes no action, the request expires in 24 hours.
  6. If the forward is removed, approval is revoked.
