This article outlines the current process for “eKYC/KYC” Registrant Verification for .IN domain registrations, as communicated by NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India). It is intended to assist in understanding the roles, expectations, and communication flow involved in ensuring compliant domain registration.
Overview of the End-to-End Registrant Verification Process
- Registrant Verification is only required at the time of new domain registration.
- Upon receiving a new .IN domain registration, NIXI will verify all requirements sent by the registrar.
- NIXI will send a formal email to the registrar requesting “KYC” documents and a brief justification for domain name usage (in case of sensitive keywords like bank, bharat etc.).
- The submitted documents are reviewed by NIXI’s Compliance Team.
- If the documents are approved by NIXI, the domain is removed from server hold; if not, it remains on hold until completion.
- Verification emails are sent directly to the registrant, with the registrar copied (CC’d) on all such communications.
- NIXI does not delete domain names that fail verification. They remain on server hold until the end of their expiry.
Requirements for Successful Verification
For Private Individuals:
- Government-issued ID (e.g., Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID)
- Brief justification for domain use (1–2 lines)
For Legal Entities (e.g., corporations or organizations):
- Certificate of Incorporation/Registration
- Authorized signatory’s government-issued ID
- Letterhead or other supporting document stating the purpose of domain use
For Foreign Nationals:
- Foreign nationals/entities are eligible to apply for and obtain .IN (India ccTLD) domain names.
- Registrations of .IN domain names by persons/entities residing outside of India (Non-Resident/foreign Registrants), NIXI requires the Non-Resident/foreign Registrant to provide their business connection and/or purpose of connection to India.

Tucows Registrant Verification Process for NIXI, .IN Domain Registration
Tucows verification process is triggered in response to results from NIXI’s registration data process. NIXI uses registration data information related to the domain registration to check whether a .IN domain was lawfully registered with proper registration requirements, documentation, and verification. Failure to comply can result in cancellation of the domain registration or the registrar being penalized.
Tucows Verification Steps:
- Upon receipt of a compliance notification from NIXI, we initiate each notification by searching for the domain name in our ticketing system to ensure that there are no duplicate cases or open tickets associated with the domain.
- We retrieve the registrant's contact information from the domain's registration data record in the AWI, along with the contact details of the reseller.
- An official notification is sent to the registrant with the reseller copied, using the communication provided by NIXI.
- Once registration data is updated, the registrant must send documentation to NIXI directly.
- NIXI does not provide a timeframe for domains put on server hold prior to commencement of the above process. Therefore, we rely on document submissions from the registrant for suspension removal. We have also found that NIXI is more responsive to the registrant than to us.
