ICANN RDP Changes – What You Need to Know

ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is introducing a new Registration Data Policy (RDP). These changes affect how domain ownership is defined and what information is shared publicly. This article explains what is changing and how to take action if needed. [SME CONFIRM: all listed dates fall in 2025 and are now in the past — verify whether this notice is still current or needs updating for the post-rollout state.]

What is changing

Starting May 28, 2025, registrants receive a one-time email notifying them that the Organization field in their domain contact information officially determines who is recognized as the legal owner of the domain.

What the email tells you

If your domain's contact record includes an entry in the Organization field, you receive an email starting May 28, 2025, with the following information:

  • If the Organization field is filled in, that organization is the legal domain owner.
  • If you want to be recognized as the individual owner, you must remove the Organization field.
  • If you want your organization to remain as owner, make sure the organization name is correct, and any personal information (such as your name) is replaced with organization-level details.
  • Organization information does not appear in public WHOIS results unless you opt in.

Steps to take

Depending on your preference, take one of the following actions.

If you want to be listed as the individual owner

  • Remove any entry in the Organization field of your domain's contact information.

If you want an organization to be the owner

  • Ensure the organization name is accurate.
  • Remove your personal data (such as your full name) if it is currently in the Organization field.

How your WHOIS information is published

By default, your contact details (including Organization) are not published in public WHOIS results. If you want your information to be public, see the WHOIS Publicity article.
