.IT is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Italy.
Registration details
Registration details can be found in the TLD reference chart.
Residency requirements
Resident or citizen of an EU country required.
We do not accept incoming .IT domain transfers. .IT domains are auto-renew-only and will delete 30 days before the expiration if not set to auto-renew. There is no charge when changing ownership, and the registration term does not change. You will need to contact support to update the contact details.
The following DNS requirements must be pre-configured for any domain name registered:
- The servers' IP addresses must be static and correspond to those associated.
- The first nameserver must be the same as indicated in the Server of Authority (SOA) record of the domain name.
- A CNAME must not be associated with the domain name.
- The name of the nameserver specified in the SOA cannot be a CNAME.
- At least one MX or A record must exist for the domain name.
- Where an MX record is listed, it must not have an associated CNAME.
- The servers must not give the following responses: not responding, not reachable, not running, non-existent domain, host not found, server failure, query failed.
- Indicated nameservers must be authoritative for the domain name.
Additional Registrant Verification
The .IT registry may flag Registrant contact data found to have incomplete or inaccurate information. In these instances, the registry will reach out to both the Registrant and Enom.
If flagged, domains associated with the registrant contact will continue to resolve for the initial 30 days with the following statuses applied "serverDeleteProhibited, serverTransferProhibited, serverUpdateProhibited". After the initial 30 day period if no corrections have been made, a 45 day period will begin where domains associated with the registrant contact will stop resolving and have the following statues applied "Inactive, serverDeleteProhibited, serverTransferProhibited, serverUpdateProhibited". This allows for up to 75 total days for registrant data corrections to be made. Once the updates are verified by the .IT registry the holds will be removed.
Registrant Contact data that has not been updated after 75 days will see associated domains placed on an "inactive/serverHold" status by the .IT Registry and fail to resolve. These domains will be deleted by the .IT registry on their expiration date.
In order to update the registrant contact data or if you are unsure what has caused the verification check, please contact our support team for assistance.
Additional Registrant Verification:
As part of the EU NIS 2 Directive, NIC.IT (Registro.it) has introduced stricter requirements for verifying registrant contact data. The following rules apply:
Complete and Accurate Data
- It is mandatory to submit complete and accurate registrant data during the registration process.
Flagged Data
- Any incomplete or inaccurate data will be flagged by the Registry Operator (Registro.it) and must be verified within 75 days from the date of the initial notification.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
- If the data is not corrected within the allotted time, all domain(s) associated with the flagged contact will be placed on serverHold and deleted upon their expiration date.
Verification Process
Registry Notification
When registrant data is incomplete or inaccurate, the .IT registry (Registro.it) flags the registrant contact and notifies:
- The Registrant directly, and
- Enom (via our vendor for .IT).
Enom Support Contact
- Resellers must contact Enom support requesting corrections to the data, including valid information for the contact update, and if requested, additional documentation (e.g., ID card, passport, Tax ID) to validate the data.
- Enom support will inform resellers of the success or failure of the registrant contact update.
Further Documentation
- If the data still cannot be verified, the Reseller may be required to submit additional documents until the information is deemed accurate.
Important: Once a Registrant contact is flagged, all domains associated with that contact are affected and subject to the same compliance timeline.
Important Timelines
0 – 30 Days (Initial Request)
Email Notification
- The Registrant is informed that their data has been flagged as incorrect/incomplete by the registry
- Resellers must contact Enom support via support ticket to begin the update process
Domain Status
Domains remain active but are assigned the following statuses:
- serverDeleteProhibited
- serverTransferProhibited
- serverUpdateProhibited
Data Correction
- If correct data is submitted during this period, domains revert to “active” status.
31 – 45 Days (Follow-Up Request)
Follow-Up Notification
- A second reminder is sent by the registry to the Registrant if no corrections have been made.
Domain Resolution
- If the Registrant still has not updated the data by Day 45, the associated domains stop resolving and receive:
- Inactive
- serverDeleteProhibited
- serverTransferProhibited
- serverUpdateProhibited
After 75 Days
Deletion on Expiration
- If corrections are not made by Day 75, the Registry will delete the domain(s) on their expiration date. At this stage, the following statuses are applied:
- Inactive
- serverHold
Note: All domain names linked to the incorrect or incomplete contact data will be deleted upon their expiry if verification is not completed in time.
Registry Email to Registrant
Registrant contacts who are flagged may receive Emails from the registry with the following subject(s), These notices indicate the start of data verification, successful data verification, un-successful data verification, unsuccessful verification with registrar deletion, as well as the ending of the initial 30 day period.
- Start of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of the Registrant>
- Successful conclusion of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of Registrant>
- Unsuccessful conclusion of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of the Registrant>
- Domains deactivation of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of the Registrant>
- Unsuccessful conclusion of data accuracy verification procedure due to expiry of the terms - Registrant <org of the Registrant>
